Corn and the Cob

Eating is one of my favorite pastime. Now, this might surprise many who knew me, especially those who have met me in person. I don’t carry the physique of someone who indulge in gluttony every now and then, quite the opposite. It’s just that I like to spend more time eating less food.

On my way from work one fine Wednesday, I passed by a pasar malam. I haven’t been to one in months, so I pulled over. I got myself some food for dinner, and for the purpose of our discussion, 5 boiled corn on the cob for RM3.

While most people would rather eat it straight from the cob, I on the other hand find the resultant mess left on the cob quite disgusting.

So, i’d snap the cob in two and begin plucking 2 rows of corn from the center with my fingers and feed it into my mouth. Although this makes a very slow eating, but the juices are still intact and can be savoured to the very last. Delicious. After i’m done with the plucking, I’d pry the rest with my thumb into a bowl to be eaten later if there’s any, or straight into my mouth. As more of the corn could be plucked at once, this makes for a faster plucking. Repeat for the other half of the cob.

The result: clean and visually pleasant cob with no wasted kernels, no corn membranes still stuck to the cob (or in between your teeth.) A pleasurable corn-eating experience!

Well… I suppose it’s different strokes for different folks. In the pro- ’straight from the cob’ camp, I think you’re missing out on the joys of messy eating habit ;) Macam ada nikmat yang tak dapat diukir dengan kata-kata woo

Plus, there is a technique of eating it straight off the cob without wasting the kernels. It requires skill and set of teeth that is just right for the thing.

    And yay for updating!

It’s so cute that you actually take the trouble to kikis all the corn from the cob before finally devouring it. Frankly, I don’t have that much patience. Contrary to you, I eat mine straight off from the cob eventhough I end up having corn stuck in between my teeth.

And sucking the sweet juice from the cob after clearing the corn is just… divine! Saya dan Kay serupa, kan Kay kan? Skill kena ada beb! And that comes from a lot of eating… chiahahah!

Naz, we should have corn on cob eating competition against each other!!

It’s not the messy eating that i’m having problems with. It’s the messy leftovers. I just can’t see leftover kernels all around the cob. It’s as if I did not do a good job eating (makan tak abis.)

Naz, you should try plucking it from the cob. Gila layan beb! No corn in between your teeth, too!

I guess we both could agree on this: Sucking the juice from the cob. But there’s not much juice left on the it if you pluck them out as most of it is still intact inside the membrane and only punctured inside your mouth.

  5. naz Says:

    Yes we should Kay!

The thrill is when you bite off the corn from the cob sambil you suck the juice… lagi layan! If I pluck nanti macam beli corn in cup, no feel!

Hehe lain orang lain carala kan… :p

LOL! I’m with Naz and Kay. Hehehe :)

You can not beat freshly plucked corn straight off the cob. Corn in cup is not even comparable. The corn, boiled with its cob intact, only separated during the moment of truth… to be savoured bit by bit, every bit that matters inside the mouth.

    I love corns.

Sweetcorn in tuna pasta, yum. Corn in cup, yum, Corn on cob, even better. Jagung bakar. Jagung rebus. Kek jagung is not too bad, neither is puding jagung (but it depends on who makes it I suppose..)

Mmmm I don’t like jus jagung though.. I feel I’ve associated jagung with chewing and anything different would be not on.
